Your child’s football age group depends on the nation, named competition, season and date of birth. School year can be a useful clue, but it does not establish match eligibility.

Use the UK age guide as a starting point, then ask the club or competition organiser to confirm eligibility before attending training or registering.

Why age groups matter

Age group affects match eligibility, team format, ball size and who your child will play with. England’s 2026/27 FutureFit pathway uses 3v3 at Under 7 and smaller formats for longer, with 11v11 from Under 14. Other UK nations have their own frameworks; confirm the actual competition’s rules.

Nation, season and competition rules

England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland do not use one universal age cut-off. Some competitions also follow different seasons or pathways within a nation. Check the named competition and season in our UK age guide, then confirm its current rules with the organiser or relevant football authority.

Playing up or down

Training with a group and eligibility to play its matches are different questions. Playing up or down may be limited by age, competition rules and any required permission. Ask the organiser or relevant football authority; a club’s preference cannot override those rules.
